Big News about the 2019 Winter Getaway

Dear Murphy Writing Community,

We have been thinking of you as we plan our upcoming retreats and getaways and want to share our big news with you.

Seaview Hotel aerial sideview

Seaview Hotel

Stockton University sold the Seaview Hotel at the end of July, and the new owners will be closing it for renovations this winter. We spent weeks looking at venues all over the state trying to find another hotel that’s large enough, reasonably-priced and available over MLK weekend, all to no avail. As a result, we are sad to say the Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway will be taking a year off. Sniff.

Although we’re disappointed, the Winter Getaway will return to Seaview better than ever in January 2020. In the meantime, we are in the process of creating several smaller new programs to bridge the gap and offer you opportunities to write in our supportive community. Here are a few of the things we have planned:

Mini Writing Getaway
A one day retreat for poets and writers
Saturday, September 22, 2018, Galloway, NJ
Need a brief break from your life? Need to rekindle your love affair with writing? Join us for this fall Getaway to give your creative spirit a much needed boost. No need to stay the night. No distractions. Just a day of writing. Learn more and register today.

When the Political Becomes Personal
A one day workshop for writers
Saturday, October 13, 2018, Atlantic City, NJ
Are you eager to contribute to the political conversation? Take advantage of our supportive atmosphere as a safe space to write a provocative personal essay worthy of submitting to the Op-Ed editors of major publications. Whether you lean left or right—or stand smack dab in the middle—this invigorating workshop will help you transform your fiery arguments into an eloquent and persuasive, thought-provoking piece. Learn more and register today.

Save the date:

  • New Year’s Writing Retreat, Atlantic City, NJ, January 12-13, 2019 – attend one day or both
  • Get Away to Write – Florida, February 10-15, 2019
  • Get Away to Write – Scotland, August 1-9, 2019
  • 26th Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway, January 17-20, 2020
  • And keep an eye on your inbox for more to come as well as several writers’ happy hours, which we like to think of as mini-reunions!
  • View our upcoming programs

Thank you for your belief in our mission and for helping us stay positive through this unexpected pause. We know this is big news and that you may want to share your feelings, so we’ve set up a forum for you to do so. After all, we are a community. Leave your comments below.

Warmest,
Peter, Amanda and Taylor

P.S. – We don’t have current email addresses for all of our past participants. If you think we missed someone, please pass this note on to them.

Thank YOU, Jin, for being a kind and generous member of the Murphy Writing community. We love seeing you each January, and we’re hoping we’ll be able to write with you at another program this year.

      Warmest,
      Peter

Of course, I am selfishly disappointed. But the box marked ‘Murphy Swap Table’ and the manila envelope marked ‘Murphy Post Cards’ will only get heavier. In the meantime, I/we will anticipate further Getaway adventures. In the meantime, we can ‘renovate’ our poems.
    Fondly, Seema

Boy, did this comment make me smile. You’re right about the bookswap and the postcards, Seema.

Have fun renovating your poems. Here’s hoping you’ll bring some of those needing extra love to another Murphy Writing program this year.

      Warmest,
      Peter

Glad to know we’ll be returning to Seaview, the perfect conference facility, in 2020, thanks for good news. And all your workshops and mini-getaways are reinvigorating. I’ll be seeing you at one or more. Until January 2020, your ardent promoter.

Hi, young fellow! Sorry to hear about Seaview. Update—I am living at my farm in PA acting as a care provider for my wife. Dick is at an assisted nursing home in Ambler, PA. We are both in our late 80′ now. We seldom if ever get to the shore.

Wishing you, Amanda and Taylor all the best in the future. Thanks for 20 plus years of writing help. Please keep me on your e-mail list—you never know!!!
