Channeling Grief:
A Poetry Workshop

Writing Workshop in New Jersey
January 17-20, 2025
Led by Sham-e-Ali Nayeem

Filled. Waitlist available. Learn more.

Writing is a means to channel complex emotions through personal expression. In this workshop, let’s explore how poetry can be a sacred container for the act of grieving. While we will take a closer look at our feelings around loss, this workshop is not meant to replace therapy or grief counseling; instead, we will focus on how to use the craft of poetry to cultivate space and express our unique stories with love and honesty. We will write, share and connect in this safe, encouraging environment.

*Limited to just 10 participants.*

“It was wonderful to feel welcomed as a newcomer, while getting the sense that I had joined a larger community. I wrote four great poems and a lot of new material; hopefully I met lifelong friends! Thank you so much.”
~ Maria, Myrtle Beach, SC

About

This writing workshop is part of the Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway, held each January. Peter E. Murphy started the Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway in 1994 based on his belief that when writers leave behind distractions to gather in an encouraging community, they will make breakthroughs in their art.

Celebrating its 32nd year, the Getaway is one of the oldest and largest writer's conferences in the winter season, attracting writers from across the globe.

"I cannot express it enough: the writing opportunities that you provide are a GODSEND. We are all so busy in our daily lives–working, caregiving for young and old, surviving our daily challenges–that to have an uninterrupted respite to write and speak only of the craft of writing for a whole weekend is bliss. I truly enjoyed the Winter Getaway and its supportive community." – Karen, Highland Park, NJ
