A Generative Writing Workshop

Poetry Workshop in NJ
January 17-20, 2025

Facilitated by Peter E. Murphy with feedback sessions led by our poetry faculty: celeste doaks, Luray Gross, Darla Himeles, Le Hinton, Peter E. Murphy, Christine E. Salvatore and Gretna Wilkinson

Using a mix of discussion, writing exercises and feedback, you will hone your craft and jumpstart your writing for the new year. How it works…

Limited to just 10 participants per section.

“When you look around the table and realize that you will be sharing and participating in a workshop with accomplished, published writers and you are relatively new to writing, it can be intimidating. At Murphy Writing programs, it’s the opposite. You’re motivated to produce better work than you would on your own, and the comments and suggestions are helpful, constructive and considerate. I have one published piece, and I felt that my work and opinions were respected and accepted as much as others in my group that had written multiple books. I don’t know if you could find that environment anywhere else.”
~  Lee, Linwood, NJ

How It Works

There are three main components to this poetry workshop:

1. Round-table discussion of carefully-curated poems: We start each writing session by reading and discussing a packet of poems. Sampling other poets will inspire you to write in ways that are fresh and independent from your usual routine.

2. Prompt and writing time: You will receive imaginative assignments and have time to write.

3. Supportive group feedback session: You will share your new poems and receive helpful feedback. Our talented faculty will help you identify the heart of your poems and encourage you to take imaginative and linguistic risks so that you can make breakthroughs in your work.

You will work with three different feedback session leaders during the weekend. Each has a unique and encouraging style, which will nurture your poetry in different ways. You may identify faculty preferences for your feedback sessions, if any, during the registration process.

You will leave this three-day workshop with at least three new poems, feeling energized and excited to continue writing.

Please note: Due to our sliding scale tuition system, your tuition does NOT include one-on-one tutorials. If you would like to add on a tutorial, you may do so when you register.

*You may remember this workshop as “Advanced Poetry,” “Poetry Workshop” or the “Poetry Circus.”

Frequently Asked Question
Q: I’ve been to dozens of workshops. What will I get out of this one?
A: Peter challenges experienced writers to push beyond their usual limits. If you have been writing for decades, he will compel you to go deeper, take more risks and experiment with form and content. We know that experienced writers benefit from our programs based on the fact that hundreds of “re-PETERs” have attended three or more of our writing getaways. Try one of Peter’s prompts from Challenges for the Delusional.

About

This writing workshop is part of the Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway, held each January. Peter E. Murphy started the Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway in 1994 based on his belief that when writers leave behind distractions to gather in an encouraging community, they will make breakthroughs in their art.

Celebrating its 32nd year, the Getaway is one of the oldest and largest writer's conferences in the winter season, attracting writers from across the globe.

"I cannot express it enough: the writing opportunities that you provide are a GODSEND. We are all so busy in our daily lives–working, caregiving for young and old, surviving our daily challenges–that to have an uninterrupted respite to write and speak only of the craft of writing for a whole weekend is bliss. I truly enjoyed the Winter Getaway and its supportive community." – Karen, Highland Park, NJ
