The Poet’s Myth:
A Workshop
Writing Workshop in New Jersey
January 16-19, 2026
Led by Jason Mitchell

In this generative poetry workshop, we’ll take a closer look at the origin of classical Western European poetry: the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. We’ll examine texts from classical mythology to contemporary poetry, uncovering the power of poetic inspiration. Over three days, we’ll read and respond to poems and artworks that engage with the myth in various forms. Works by Rainer Maria Rilke, Jack Spicer, Walt Whitman and H.D. will serve as touchstones for exploring the nature of artistic creation, and bring the forces of love, death and desire into our conversation. This workshop is for writers at all levels interested in exploring myth, artistry and the dynamic relationship between poet and muse.
*Limited to just 10 participants.*
“I had such a great time and left feeling exhausted and rejuvenated, with my luggage full of new poems, books and a renewed excitement. I’ve heard so many great things about the Getaway, but no praise equaled the experience.”
~ Stacey, Fresno, CA
