Free Yourself:
Innovative Approaches to Creative Nonfiction

Writing Workshop in New Jersey
January 13-16, 2023
Led by Mike Ingram

Writer writing

Our lives rarely present themselves to us in tidy, three-act structures, which can make giving shape to our joys, heartbreaks and struggles difficult. In this workshop, we will experiment with innovative strategies for structuring your life experience in a way that comes alive on the page, without relying on a traditional plot arc. Quick-hit writing prompts will give you fresh angles for approaching your lived experience, and more sustained writing time will allow you to experiment with form. Whether you are stuck in a current book or essay project, or looking to start something new, this workshop will push you to take imaginative and structural risks while receiving feedback from your classmates and instructor in an encouraging, supportive environment.

*Limited to just 10 participants.*

“The workshop leaders are talented and compassionate, pushing you to new levels. The atmosphere is charged with creativity and appreciation for the work of others. I travel from Chicago to attend and have not been disappointed.”
~ Donna, Willowbrook, IL

About

This writing workshop is part of the Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway, held each January. Peter E. Murphy started the Winter Poetry & Prose Getaway in 1994 based on his belief that when writers leave behind distractions to gather in an encouraging community, they will make breakthroughs in their art.

Celebrating its 32nd year, the Getaway is one of the oldest and largest writer's conferences in the winter season, attracting writers from across the globe.

"I cannot express it enough: the writing opportunities that you provide are a GODSEND. We are all so busy in our daily lives–working, caregiving for young and old, surviving our daily challenges–that to have an uninterrupted respite to write and speak only of the craft of writing for a whole weekend is bliss. I truly enjoyed the Winter Getaway and its supportive community." – Karen, Highland Park, NJ
