Widening the Lens:
Writing Outside the “I” in Memoir
Writing workshop in New Jersey
January 17-20, 2020
Led by Lisa Romeo
Memoir writers must mine their memories, digging deep into personal thoughts and feelings to tell stories that focus on the narrator—the “I.” But the memoir lens must also pan to the side at times. Other people, objects and places can carry powerful elements of the narrator’s story and bring a memoir more vividly alive for readers. In this advanced memoir workshop, we will read and discuss examples that beautifully incorporate all that exists outside the “I” in memoir. Using inspiring prompts, we will practice writing memoir with a wider lens, and we will also gather to share and receive feedback. Bring drafts to revise or generate something brand new.
*Limited to just 10 participants.*
“I came into the getaway not knowing what to expect and left counting down the days until I could come back. It was easy to take risks and attempt something new with such a wonderful community of writers who all expressed such support and encouragement. It was something that I did not realize I was missing in my life until I experienced it. Thank you!”
